Cambridge Street Detailed Design Solutions

RMD was appointed to up-date the existing interior of a Victorian town house

Particular focus was made on opening up the space to the lower ground floor and adding a rear extension to bring natural light into the area.

Following our initial consultation with the planning department and conservation society we opted to design and install a bespoke structural glass conservatory that would cover part of the rear courtyard and increase the footprint to the lower floor.

Full drawing packages were supplied for construction and management of the planning application and full plans were submitted to the building control and conservation departments.

Liaising with structural engineers, building control and specialist suppliers to achieve a seamlessly open space, RMD moved the kitchen to the ground floor and designed bespoke units to complement the conservatory.

In addition to the extensive work carried out on the ground floor, we designed and commissioned a fully integrated oak and veneer inlayed bookcase with hidden doors, and a desk for the first floor. Perpendicular slots with glass panels and floating shelves allowed light from the main corridor to filter through into the library.

RMD created a series of invisible storage walls on both the ground and second floors to allow all household goods to be stored out of sight and ensure a clutter-fee environment. The 5m storage wall on the lower ground floor ran the length of the house following through into the kitchen space and housed a secret door to a washroom as well as a children’s toy cupboard and a television.

The general palette of white limestone and cream lacquer finish, with strategically placed mirror panels and hidden light features, created a warm but fresh atmosphere where the client’s eclectic collection of artwork and furniture created an attractive colour and tonal contrast throughout the interior.

The property was successfully sold six months following completion for a substantial return, setting a standard for other similar properties in the same street.
